Picture a Friday night with the windows down. String lights glowing over a patio. A table full of plates you keep passing around. That is how dinner feels here, and it is one of my favorite things about living in Jacksonville.
I get asked a lot where to eat, and the question usually sounds like this: Avondale or San Marco? I love both. They just feel different. Here is how I split them up for friends.
Avondale Is a Walk Down St. Johns Avenue
Avondale is where you park once and stay a while. St. Johns Avenue is lined with old oaks, little boutiques, and porches that look like they have stories. Dinner here feels like a stroll that happens to end with something delicious.
Biscottis has been a neighborhood favorite for years. It is the kind of place where brunch turns into a two hour conversation and nobody minds. When I want a night that feels a little more special, I head to Orsay, where a polished dinner still feels relaxed. Afterward, walk it off past the shops and the front yards. Somebody will wave at you. I promise.
San Marco Is Built Around the Square
San Marco has a center, and locals just call it the Square. The lion fountain sits in the middle, patios spill out around it, and everything you want is a short walk away. Dinner, then dessert, then a lap around the fountain while the sky turns pink.
I mapped out a whole day here in my guide to a Saturday in San Marco, but the short version is this. Come hungry, come early, and let the evening unfold on foot. San Marco Square is one of the easiest places in Jacksonville to feel like you live here, even on your first visit.
I filmed a walk through both neighborhoods and their restaurants if you want to see it for yourself.
How I Choose Between Them
Here is my honest rule. If I want a slow afternoon with a good friend and a table where we can talk until the server gently checks on us twice, I pick Avondale. If I want a night with a little buzz, a patio, and a fountain to wander toward afterward, I pick San Marco.
Both are walkable. Both have mature trees and the kind of streets that make you want to take the long way home. The difference is the rhythm. Avondale moves like a front porch conversation. San Marco moves like a Friday night that is just getting started.
Eat First, Then Decide Where to Live
When people tell me they are thinking about moving to Jacksonville, I give them homework. Book two dinners. One in Avondale, one in San Marco. Pay attention to where you slow down, where you lean back in your chair, and where you catch yourself wondering what the neighbors are like.
Your appetite knows things a spreadsheet does not. If you want more spots to try, my list of restaurants locals actually go to is a good place to start. You can also use Visit Jacksonville to see what is happening around town while you are here.
When you are ready to turn those dinners into a real plan, I would love to hear which neighborhood made your heart skip. Book a time with me and we will start with where you ate and work our way to where you could live.
