The Best Coffee Shops in Jacksonville, FL (According to a Local)
There is something about the way Jacksonville mornings feel that I cannot quite explain to people who have never lived here. The air is already warm before 8 AM. The light comes in golden through the Spanish moss. And somehow, the coffee just tastes better when you are drinking it in a city that feels like home. I have been living in Jacksonville my whole life, and I have spent a truly embarrassing amount of time in the coffee shops here. These are the ones that actually matter. The spots where locals go, not just the ones that pop up first on a Google search.
Bold Bean Coffee Roasters
If you have been in Jacksonville for more than five minutes, you already know Bold Bean. They have been roasting here since 2007 and they are basically the godfather of the local coffee scene. The Riverside location on Park Street has this worn-in, lived-in feeling that makes you want to stay for three hours. They roast their own beans on-site and take it seriously in the best way. Order the single origin pour over if you want to understand what all the fuss is about. It is the kind of cup that makes you stop mid-sip and just appreciate being alive. Fair warning: Bold Bean gets busy. Go early or go prepared to wait, because it is always worth it.
Vagabond Coffee
Vagabond started as a mobile coffee camper showing up at local events around Jacksonville, which is honestly the most Jax origin story I can think of. Now they have a permanent home in Murray Hill and they still roast their own coffee right there on site. Murray Hill has this scrappy, creative energy that fits Vagabond perfectly. The seasonal drinks rotate and the staff actually knows what they are talking about. If you are moving to Jacksonville and you want to find the neighborhood with the most soul, go to Murray Hill and start your morning at Vagabond. You will understand immediately.
Southern Grounds
Southern Grounds is the one I recommend to everyone who asks me where to take out-of-town guests. They have locations in Atlantic Beach, San Marco, and Avondale, so you can find one no matter what part of the city you are exploring. The San Marco location sits right in the middle of one of the most charming neighborhoods in Jacksonville, with oak tree canopies lining the streets outside and a beautiful open interior inside. They serve wine later in the day, which means you can technically justify staying from morning coffee straight through to a glass of rosé. Not that I have done that. Okay, I have done that.
Sago Coffee at Jacksonville Beach
If you are spending any time at the beaches, Sago is a must. It is absolutely covered in plants, like walking into someone's very cool living room, and the vibe is exactly what you want after a morning walk on the sand. This is one of those places that people who live in Jax Beach are a little territorial about, because it feels like a secret even though it is not really a secret anymore. The drinks are thoughtful and the space is beautiful. Grab something iced, take it outside, and remember that you live somewhere extraordinary.
Brass Tacks Coffee Co.
Brass Tacks is out on the Southside and it deserves way more attention than it gets. They roast their own beans, they have a drive-thru for those mornings when you simply cannot, and their menu goes from a perfect traditional espresso all the way to Vietnamese iced coffee and blended matcha lattes. It is the kind of place that works for everyone. Coffee snob or casual latte drinker, you will find something here. The space is clean and bright and the team is genuinely warm. I always leave feeling good, and not just because of the caffeine.
1985 Coffee Shop in Atlantic Beach
1985 is small and special. They make a lot of their syrups and seasonal drinks in house, which means the menu feels creative without being gimmicky. Atlantic Beach itself is worth the drive if you have not explored it yet. It has this easygoing, community feel that is different from the bigger beach areas, and 1985 fits right into that. Go on a weekend morning, sit outside if you can, and just take it all in. This is what Jacksonville living actually feels like on its best days.
The Real Reason the Coffee Tastes Better Here
I know what I just told you sounds like a coffee guide, but it is really a love letter to Jacksonville. Every single one of these spots is locally owned, deeply rooted in their neighborhoods, and packed with people who actually know their neighbors. That is not an accident. That is just how this city is built. When people ask me what it is really like to live in Jacksonville, I tell them to go get a cup of coffee first. Not at a chain. At one of these places. Give it one morning and you will start to understand why people who move here keep talking about staying longer than they planned.
If you are thinking about making Jacksonville your home and you want to know what neighborhood fits your life best, I would love to show you around. Let's start with coffee.
