There is a Saturday morning I think about all the time. Coffee in one hand. Sneakers on. No keys in my pocket.
I walked to the market, bumped into a neighbor, picked up peaches, and strolled home under oak trees that have been arching over the same sidewalk for a hundred years. That is the Jacksonville a lot of people never expect.
We are a big, spread out city, and yes, most days you will drive. But tucked inside all that sprawl are pockets where you can really live on foot. If you are thinking about moving to Jacksonville and wondering where those pockets are, this one is for you.
Riverside and Five Points: Where the Sidewalks Do the Work
If I had to pick one neighborhood to prove the point, it would be Riverside. Park Street and King Street are lined with coffee counters, bakeries, and neighborhood bars you can reach without ever touching a steering wheel. Five Points is right there with its vintage shops and its famous little intersection.
Saturday mornings belong to the Riverside Arts Market, tucked under the Fuller Warren Bridge along the river. Local makers, fresh produce, live music, and half the neighborhood saying hello to each other. After that, walk a few minutes to Memorial Park and watch the dogs and the kids work out their energy on the grass beside the St. Johns.
Homes here run from 1910s bungalows to grand brick Tudors. Every street feels like it has a story, and the oaks do most of the talking.
Avondale: St. Johns Avenue Is the Whole Plan
Avondale feels like a small town that happens to sit inside a big city. St. Johns Avenue is the spine, and everything good radiates off it. Boutiques, patios, local favorites, and the Shoppes of Avondale all within a few easy blocks.
Come hungry. Come with someone you like. Plan to walk slowly, because you will keep running into people you know.
The streets around it are shaded, quiet, and full of porches that actually get used. Evening walks here are a sport.
I filmed a walk down St. Johns Avenue if you want to see it for yourself.
San Marco: A Square, a Lake, and a Slower Pace
San Marco Square has a fountain, a movie theater, and the kind of restaurants where the server remembers your order. You can park once and spend the whole afternoon wandering.
Walk the lake, then drift back toward the shops. There is a riverfront stretch nearby too, perfect for a sunset stroll when the sky turns peach over the St. Johns.
It is polished but never stuffy. A great fit if you want walkable and calm at the same time.
Murray Hill and Springfield: Walkable With Character
Murray Hill's Edgewood Avenue is a small stretch with a big personality. Coffee, tacos, and shops sit close together, and the bungalows behind them make for lovely wandering.
Springfield is the one I tell people to watch. Beautiful historic homes, a revived Main Street, and a park at its center. It is a neighborhood still writing its next chapter, and that is exactly why people love it.
The Beaches: Walk to the Sand
Walkable does not have to mean historic. Around Beaches Town Center in Neptune Beach, you can stroll to dinner, then stroll to the ocean to watch the last light fade. Jacksonville Beach has its own energy closer to the pier.
Salt in the air, sand in your shoes, and a flip flop kind of Sunday. It is a different flavor of walkable, and for many people it is the perfect one.
What to Know Before You Fall for a Walkable Street
Let me be real with you. Even in the most walkable pockets, you will still use a car for bigger errands. Older homes bring charm and also a longer list of questions, from roofs to insurance to inspections. And living close to the action means a little more neighborhood buzz on busy weekends.
None of that scares my clients away. It just helps them choose with open eyes. If you want the bigger picture on getting around town, my post on Jacksonville traffic is a good place to start, and my favorite Jacksonville neighborhoods will give you even more to explore.
